Whoever said that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks has certainly not met the Filipino rebels who surrendered in front of our President Rodrigo Duterte.

Former members of the 683 Communist fighters of the NPA were presented to President Duterte last December are now being rehabilitated and helped by the Armed Forces of the Philippines to be once again part of the normal workforce and law abiding citizens of this great country.

One of their ways of trying to show the rebels that the Government cares for them is that all of the female members of their army are being sent to Hong Kong for a special tour, all-expense paid by the Government. While the date is still being determined and their documents being processed, they are staying in the headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

“It is still being finalized. The government will definitely [provide the trip]. As to the specific office, it will be discussed soon,” said Maj. Ezra Balagtey, the spokesman of EastMin Command through a text message to the Manila Times.

The rebels are also set to meet the president and have dinner with him in the Malacañang Palace. Not only will they have ample time with the president, they will also be toured around the nation’s capital to show them the un-violent nationalism of the Filipino People.

“The activity is part of continuing activities of reintegrating the former rebels into the mainstream society and to give them a better perspective on life,” Said Balagtey.

But these are not the last of the surrendered NPA rebels, because each month more and more of them turn themselves in the care of the ARMY in hopes of safety and assurance that they can go back to their original lives.

This advocacy of the ARMY and the President to not criticize these rebels but rather help them build their lives back together is a very heroic thing and it shows the camaraderie amongst us Filipinos and it tells us that ‘Bayanihan’ is still alive among everyone no matter what our ideals are.
