New York Mets star Francisco Alvarez is getting some bad news. Alvarez is expected to miss six to eight weeks due to a hand injury, per MLB reporter Mark Feisand. The Mets catcher needs surgery.
Alvarez has a hamate bone fracture. That affects his ability to throw and catch. Mets fans hope that the catcher can have a speedy recovery, and return to the team as soon as possible.
The catcher has worked hard this spring to improve his swing, in an effort to help lift the team’s offense. Due to the injury, the team will be using Luis Torrens much more regularly at catcher.
Alvarez finished the 2024 season for the Mets with a .237 batting average. He hit 11 home runs and drove in 47 runs. The catcher also made a name for himself in the postseason, by talking some trash to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Mets looking for a World Series in 2025
The Mets made a big splash this offseason by grabbing Juan Soto from the free agent market. While Soto is expected to lead the offense, plenty of others like Alvarez are expected to help.
New York is looking for a trip to the World Series. The Mets made the NLCS last season, before ultimately bowing to the Dodgers.
Alvarez is hoping to have a big season in 2025, after some struggles last year. In 2024, the Mets catcher injured his thumb. That injury seemed to affect his batting. Now, New York fans can only hope this hand fracture doesn’t also prove to be a detriment.
The Mets catcher is just 23 years old. He’s one of the most respected young prospects on the team. Alvarez joined the Mets in 2022, and appeared in five games that season. In 2023 Alvarez hit at a .209 average with 63 RBIs. Time will tell when the catcher can return to the Mets lineup.
